The film began when filmmaker David Ranevski began following Bol on Facebook with the intention of making a follow up to his 2006 documentary "The Edge of Heaven". The film was entirely self funded with total box office take being US$4,500. The budget included printing the feature film by hand in Macedonia and shipping it to North America. Ranevski also paid for editing and sound design out of his own pocket until receiving public funding from Telefilm Canada at that point. Bol received the Audience Award at the 2010 Atlantic Film Festival and came first in the "Best Drama" category of the 2010 Cinema Politica Reel Competition. This helped to build Ranevski's profile and led to a distribution deal with Mongrel Media. Ranevski ran a successful Kickstarter campaign raising $15,000 to finish post production on the film. The English subtitles were made available as a free download on Bol's Facebook page before the film debuted at festivals.
