This movie is a Bollywood adaptation of the nineteenth century epic poem "The Peshwa Bajirao" by Kedarnath. This film is about romance, trust, betrayal, honour and love in relationships. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali it stars Ranveer Singh as Bajirao I, Deepika Padukone as Mastani and Priyanka Chopra as Kashibai. It tells the story of Peshwa Bajirao who was the ruler of the Maratha Empire before being overthrown by his son Mastani's grandfather Shamsher Bahadur after British interference to restore British rule in India. He, with the help of Kashibai, who was first Bajirao's first wife before being replaced by Mastani, seeks to destroy his son and return power back to him. Bajirao I falls in love with Mastani before he marries Kashibai. She is the daughter of Bhavar Singh, a Maratha general who was killed by Afzal Khan. Khan curses Mastani that she will not have any children. He also steals her necklace, which has two tridents joined together, known as "Harras" (meaning "ones who tear apart" in Hindi), that were gifted to her by Bajirao. However she then marries Baji Rao instead. She is his second wife. Bajirao's relationship with Kashibai is strained. She bears him two sons, Shamsher Bahadur and Chimaji Appa. However, Mastanis predicts that Bajirao will have an early death, something she can prevent if she has enough power to unite the Maratha Empire. Being the Peshwa's wife gives her the power to influence his decisions, but is not enough to save him from his enemies. Not being able to bear her husband dying, Mastani seeks help from Kashibai who makes a plan to overthrow Baji Rao in order to make her son Shamsher Bahadur the next Peshwa. Mastani plans to wait until Bajirao's son is old enough to take over, in the hope of being regent. However, when Shamsher is too young to rule the Maratha Empire, Mastani makes a plan with Kashibai to overthrow Baji Rao when he comes back from his military campaign. They plot against him, imprisoning him in Devgad fort. Mastani then makes a deal with the British Empire in order to return power to her husband. After defeating the British at Bombaim (modern-day Mumbai), Kashibai takes over as regent for Shamsher with help from Baji Rao's loyalist Balwant Phadnis. She also forces Mastani to leave Bajirao and never see him again. Bajirao is given a public trial and execution by the new Maratha Empire government led by Kashibai. The film was first announced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali during the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
